| Outcomes: Students gain an understanding of how micro-organisms (especially bacteria and viruses) cause disease. In the laboratory sessions students gain a deeper understanding of the activities of bacteria, viruses and fungi, and master laboratory skills for work in a professional microbiology laboratory. |

| Content: This unit assumes completion of Introductory Microbiology 204 (950.204) and deals with the theme 'bad bugs—good bugs'. The unit begins with bacterial genetics and its application to medical microbiology and to biotechnology. There are lectures on infectious diseases, including bacterial, viral and fungal pathogens, and on immunology and how the host deals with an infection. The unit then covers the useful roles of microbes in biotechnology and in the environment. In the laboratory sessions students gain a deeper understanding of the activities of bacteria, viruses and fungi, and master laboratory skills for work in a professional microbiology laboratory. This unit is one of the prerequisites for a major in Microbiology. |

| Assessment: This comprises an examination (65 per cent), laboratories (15 per cent), case study (five per cent) and laboratory practical examination (15 per cent). |
