Outcomes: At the end of this unit students understand the anatomy of the limbs as the basis of joint movement and function; the comparison between the limbs as the basis for the different functional requirements in humans; the regional anatomy of the head and neck and the anatomical, developmental and evolutionary principles it illustrates.

Content: The unit offers a regional study of the entire upper and lower limbs, describing joints and joint movements, muscle groups and patterns of innervation. It draws attention to specialised functions of the limbs such as hand mechanisms and locomotion. Topics of interest like nerve injuries relate the basic structure to altered function. This is followed by the study of the anatomical organisation of the head and neck. In addition to the topographic organisation of this region, attention is paid to functional areas like speech and swallowing along with embryonic development and its correlation.

Assessment: A written examination at the end of the unit accounts for 50 per cent of the total mark and comprises short-answer essay-type questions and multiple choice questions. The laboratory examination (40 per cent) is in the form of 'spot' questions. Ten per cent of the total mark is based on continuous assessment and this is in the form of a mid-unit laboratory test and/or written assignment.
